The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
